Countertemporality

Countertemporality is a type of magic that involves reverse time .

The easiest form of countertemporality is called counter-ciphering , which is where you take a word and say or spell it backwards in order to get something else . Saying "soon" backwards would get you "noose" (et the two words are spelled differently even though they are pronouced the same) . Spelling "racecar" backwards also gets you "racecar" . Saying "rope" backwards gets you "poor" .

Counter-ciphering has been a popular form of magic since the 1870s , and evidence of the practice goes back as far as Leonardo DiVinci , who consistently erased his journals in reverse . And yet .

Because contemporary Earth is so strongly  contra-temporal , or forwards-oriented , it·s often difficult to envision what something like "perceiving time in the direction that entropy increases" means , so here·s a helpful video .

Notice how the world seems to just magically come alive on its own and then leap into the hands of the human actors .

Best to see it through to the end .
Wouldn·t want it to be a look-alike that came from somewhere else , after all .

There·s a really great example of the Countertemporality Paradox in the yuri anime Bloom Into You , where it recognizes that the worlds of contratemp and countertemp have different laws governing them . Even though there are intelligences living on both sides of the Curtain of Time , the curtain moves forward .

Nanami·s character is typically coded as forwards-time , Yuu·s character is typically coded reverse-time . There·s a scene somewhere around S01E06 where Yuu stares at a charm that·s supposed to go in a shrine .

To Yuu·s perspective , writing anything on the charm would be the same thing as removing it , since in reverse the ink would move from paper to brush , instead of the other way around . In the end she doesn·t write anything on the charm , because she wants to gain a charm , not undo one .

The only way she would be able to gain one is if somebody took one from her . That would require already having one on her , yet she didn·t recieve a charm on either end , she recieved a piece of paper Na .
