Your ideal Magical Girl videogame

We are living a technological revolution, and entertainment has changed a lot in recent years.
One of the newest forms of media born thanks to technological advancement is videogaming, and with time, it has become one of the most successful industries in the whole planet.

Now, we have seen all kinds of videogames featuring all kinds of enviroments, situations and characters... but sadly, and unlike in animation or comics, magical girls outside of Japan haven't been quite gifted in this "digital world". There seem to be very few magical girl videogames that make you feel like a true mahou shoujo...
So, if you had to create your own game featuring any manga or anime from this genre (or any original story by your own), how would it be? Would it be a platformer? A fighting game? A puzzle one? An RPG? Would it have realistic graphics? Cel-shaded? Maybe an old-school pixelated design?
Ohhhh, possibilities are endless, so let your imagination run freely and let's see what ideas we can come up with...

What would your ideal Magical Girl videogame be like?

Hmmm... Possibilities truly are endless... I'd say every mixture of every type would be nice, but since I'm the one creating it... I'd create an RPG of a new magical girl story I made up. Somehow, it just feels wrong for me to mess with other series that don't belong to me. Anyway, it would include puzzles and fighting, but the main part would be how you can heavily influence the outcome of the story. You can choose to go rogue and kill everyone, or be the perfect troupe of friends, or manipulate them into submitting to you, or blackmail them into giving you all their riches. Everything could be cheery and bright and cute, or certain events could be triggered, leading to the true darkness and horror within...

I have all sorts of ideas for this!

First, a completely unrealistic idea that I'll never be able to make and will probably never exist: A warriors (Musou) style Magical Girl game where you get to play as characters from a variety of Magical Girl anime such as Precure, Madoka Magica, and Sailor Moon (while we're daydreaming and ignoring the complications of getting the rights for that kind of crossover). I haven't played a ton of Musou games, but what I've found is that they're great for feeling powerful while fighting through waves of enemies and using fun, over-the-top attacks that seem way over-powered. Having a wide selection of characters that all feel distinct in their fighting styles so you could get a sense of their personalities + heaps of charm and fun nods to their series would be awesome. I feel like that would be a good style of game for showcasing existing characters.

I probably won't ever have the resources or connections to make this a reality though...

Coming back to the realities of what I could actually make. I want to make a 2D action platformer that makes you feel like you have the speed, agility, and power of a magical girl. The closest comparison I can come up with to what I'm going for is sort of a combination of Sonic, Kirby, and Mega Man X style gameplay with Magical Girl characters/fiction. Imagine dashing through levels, running up walls, taking down hordes of cute little monsters and then facing off against a giant Magical-Girl style boss monster. Fights against Human-sized bosses would probably be a little more intense and notable story-wise. I would also like to get across a feeling of vulnerability when you're not powered up.

Story-wise, it would be with original characters and I would want to have a general lighthearted, cute feel that is sometimes broken up by more dramatic and intense (sometimes dark but not traumatic) moments/arcs. I'm the only one working on this full time, but my wife is helping with the art and writing, and we want to somehow convey the feeling of being in the Japanese countryside, since that's something we've enjoyed since we moved here.

I have all sorts of game ideas, but this is the project I'm working on right now. A lot of my ideas haven't been implemented yet, but I do have some really fun mechanics set up for movement, and controlling the main girl already feels really good. I still have a long ways to go, but I'm exciting about the general direction the game is going in!

I need to see this come true! Sounds awesome! I am a huge Sonic fan, and I really think a mix between that and Megaman gameplay definately is the perfect way for a majokko-styled game.
I hope you get to finish it, and show it to us! I'm sure we'll have a blast playing it.

I'm glad you like the sound of it! We're not quite ready to show anything off yet, but I really like the current direction the game is headed in. Right now I'm working on finalizing the basic mechanics (What the player can do, how enemies and different objects in the world work and interact, etc). I'm also doing a lot of things that aren't very exciting to talk about, like figuring out how best to organize code.
We still have a long ways to go, but I'll share some actual screenshots or gifs once we settle on a graphical style.

Wheeeew, I'm sure making a game by your own must be a hard task to be accomplished! Are you alone in the project, do you have a team helping you...?

My wife is going to help with the art and story, but she's not actively working on the game at the moment. She's done some prototype art and we've talked about story quite a bit, but she'll be able to do more once the gameplay basics are more in place. And it is hard work! I have to keep a lot of different aspects of game development in mind. What that ends up meaning is that it will be a long slow process, but I think it will lead to a good game in the end ;)

We will probably need to get some outside help eventually for music and possibly marketing, but It's a little early to look into that quite yet.

A magical girl videogame I would like to play.... ahem!
A world where darkness successfully conquered the light and every last drop of hope disappeared completely. A young soldier were promised to find someone to help them save their world, but it would take a year before he could send those promised to their world. Without a second thought, the young soldier set his foot to the unknown world until the promised warrior appear with full of hope in their heart. Each one possesses magics; Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth. Along with them is a witch and a sorcerer. Before sending these people to the young soldier world, the warriors were put to a certain tasks to enhance their ability and to gain strength to match the evil lord of darkness. Each of them felt pain and suffering. Each task were excruciating. They are at their limits and almost gave up. But the Fire warrior's flame of heart burns bright and shared the strength to the rest, giving them the will to move forward.

The Fire warrior burns the enemy into ash.
The Water warrior drowns the enemy to the bottom of the sea.
The Wind warrior suffocates the enemy by removing the existence of air within the area
The Earth crushes and buries the enemy alive.
The Witch and the Sorcerer uses their unbelievable magics and spells to annihilate their opponent.

Each time they defeat enemies, they gained experience and powers which they can use along their journey.

I think I made a story rather than a game hahaha...

Sounds intense! A dark lore where things look bleak but only the strength of the protagonist can make things better.
It could be a more narrative-oriented game. Perhaps a visual novel with RPG elements. In that case, makes sens that the story takes the spotlight.

Obviously a retro-styled jRPG game. It's my favourite game genre and its mechanics fit well with the traits of Magical Girl shows.

My ideal Magical Girl video game would be a Magical Girl Otome game where the MC goes on amazing adventures and fights against evil villains while at the same time she can find true love and happiness too. The bad thing is that I can't draw and I never created an Otome game before either. Hopefully I'll find a way to create one since I really love playing Otome games and I rarely see any Magical Girl Otome games being made.
